Walbro

In 1950 Walter E. Walpole founded Walbro in Fenton, Michigan. He began his career as a messenger in a Chicago bank and then worked at Borg-Warner where he became the secretary treasurer of the carburettor division. Walpole started his own company and hoped it would become the major supplier of carburettors for lawn mowers, outboard motors and small power tools.

Walpole hoped that the post-war boom would mean more homes and leisure time therefore requiring more products with small engines, which would be an increasing market for his carburettor design.

In 1957 the company began designing automobile fuel systems and the automobile industry would become a growth area for Walbro. The majority of Walbro’s automotive products were designed at this time to be aftermarket products. Small engines for lawn motors, power tools and outboard motors were still the main sector for Walbro in the 1960s and 1970s.

In the 1980s Walbro developed a fuel injection system, which was their first major development in the automotive original equipment.

In the 1990s, the company were able to benefit from tougher fuel emission standards by developing highly efficient fuel systems and alternative fuel small engine systems such as methanol. In the 1990s the company developed new products such as plastic fuel tanks, which were lighter and produced lower hydrocarbon emissions. The new tanks were used in Ford’s minivans for several years. Walbro added an electronics division in 1993, which began to develop electronic fuel injection technology. Walbro had success with its fuel modules for the Chrysler Cirrus which led to Walbro becoming the supplier of fuel modules for Chrysler’s minivan series.

Walbro is now a global leader of engine management systems for two wheeled small engine markets, outdoor power equipment, lawn and garden, recreational and marine engine markets. Walbro manufactures ignition systems, fuel injection, air/fuel management systems, pumps, valves and fuel storage and distribution systems.
