Wiring

For all your classic car wiring needs, choose The Green Spark Plug Company. We stock a wide array of wiring and supporting components, suitable for the vintage market.

Electrical Cable

If you’re looking to replace the cabling in your classic, veteran or vintage car, we would recommend using a braided cable that contains a copper conductor. Produced by weaving together smaller strands of wire, braided cable is an authentic replacement for your old wiring. To help achieve that authenticity, the modern PVC insulation we use is covered over with a layer of cotton braid, which is then lacquered. This way, you benefit from advances in cable technology without compromising on the aesthetic of your classic car.

Wherever electrical cable is required in the vehicle, we can supply a suitable type. We stock both a range of colours and sizes so you’re guaranteed to find the perfect fit. Electrical cable cores are available in 12 gauge, 16 gauge and 18 gauge, ensuring suitability for the following vehicle components:

  • Battery supply
  • Ammeter circuits
  • Head lamps
  • Low tension ignition
  • Side lamps
  • Tail lamps

Grommets

A wiring grommet helps protect cables as they pass through holes, a point at which it is easy for wear and tear to occur due to chafing. They also help to keep the wire secured in place. Blanking grommets are slightly different as they’re used to blank off holes in panels, typically metal ones.

At The Green Spark Plug Company, we stock Durite grommets made from black PVC rubber. These are available in a wide array of sizes to suit different thicknesses of wire. Rubber is used to help observe vibrations

Sleeving

The primary purpose of wire sleeving is to bundle together and protect wiring, but different types are available for specific situations:

  • Convoluted Tubing- When used to bundle together various wires, convoluted tubing helps to protect the collection against abrasion. It is petrol, oil and water resistant for added protection. A split through the nylon allows for simple installation, with the sleeving stretching over the group of wires. There’s no need to disconnect anything in order to fit the tubing. Operates effectively between -40ºC and 120ºC, making it suitable for use throughout your vehicle.

  • Heat Shrink Sleeving- When heated, this plastic tubing shrinks to a predetermined size, securing a group of wires in place and protecting them from chafing. It is highly durable in nature, capable of withstanding high temperatures. At The Green Spark Plug Company, we stock Durite’s heat shrink sleeving. This has a shrink ratio of 2:1, a minimum shrink temperature of 120ºC and an operating temperature of between -40ºC an 130ºC. A shrink ratio of 2:1 simply means that it will retract to 50% of its initial diameter. Multiple colours, sizes and thickness are available, allowing for easy identification.

  • Spiral Bound Sleeving- Made from polyethylene, spiral bound sleeving can be adjusted once fitted, making it particularly useful during times of repair.
